Mewtwo Strikes Back: Evolution's stunning CGI art style could have done wonders for "Pikachu's Vacation" with all its vibrant colors, action, and various different types of Pokémon. Since it takes place at a Pokémon park, it features a large and diverse array of Pokémon that would have been quite a sight to see in the remake. It's a fun story made even better by its emphasis on the Pokémon themselves and the lack of dialogue. "Pikachu's Vacation" puts the human characters aside and focuses on the interactions between the Pokémon, who don't necessarily get along at all times, but they all have to work together to save Charizard when an accident gets his head caught in a pipe. "Pikachu's Vacation" is about what happens when Ash leaves Pikachu and his other Pokémon at a park that's exclusive to Pokémon. Their popularity makes the exclusion of "Pikachu's Vacation" from Mewtwo Strikes Back: Evolution noteworthy, even if it's a separate, standalone story, since this particular short is widely regarded as one of the best. At this point, there are over 20 Pikachu shorts. It was so well-received that Pikachu shorts being shown alongside Pokémon movies became a trend that was repeated in numerous installments in the Pokémon franchise. The short was attached to the movie in the home video release as well. Audiences who went to see Pokémon: The Movie in theaters were first treated to a fun segment exclusively about the Pokémon. "Pikachu's Vacation" is a short that was shown before the original movie.
Mewtwo Strikes Back: Evolution's biggest change, however, is with "Pikachu's Vacation", or rather the lack thereof. Netflix's Mewtwo Strikes Back: Evolution doesn't make many changes to the original. The movie provides a CGI makeover to the first-ever Pokémon film. Originally released in Japan in 2019, Mewtwo Strikes Back: Evolution arrived on Netflix on Pokémon Day.
